The sweet scenes in this little book are a contrast to the sometimes jaded tone of Tomine's work in the great Optic Nerve series and his previous books, Summer Blonde, Shortcomings, and Sleepwalk. Many have suspected an autobiographical subtext in those previous works, but this intimate tome is billed as the artist's "first nonfiction book." As such, it casts a gentle light on Tomine's nuptials and relationship with Sarah. The two are pictured discussing the guest list, DJ, seating arrangements—in short, all the nightmarish details of wedding planning—and throughout we see their personalities emerge. Adrian starts out insisting he doesn't really want to invite most of his friends, but then gets obsessed over every detail of the invitation's design. Meanwhile, Sarah navigates caterers, florists, and gift registries, fielding Adrian's oddball requests at every turn. We watch as the two get sucked into the vortex of wedding consumerism in spite of themselves. It's a familiar scene, but a sweet one, and the ending is as tender and satisfying as a wedding day should be. This was a Great Toilet to Bath read....I started on the s***ter and went right to the bath and finished...but had to stop at the sink first ...you don't want crap in your bath. If you want to know about marriage or life read Adrian's Scenes from an Impending Marriage; I found myself reading it out-loud to my wife and laughing. This book will make you laugh and cry and if it doesn't you are a real jerk :) or just maybe Autistic , Aspergers maybe a sociopath....nonetheless, then it isn't your fault.....just pretend to laugh.
As a long time fan of Adrian Tomine since his early Optic Nerve days Scenes is a welcome departure from the all too heavy/ human tales he crafted of loss, woe and self-doubt. Scenes is also much more personal chronicling the days before the author's marriage . . . hence the title. Tomine has also taken a less realistic/ more cartoony style that usual and it is used to great effect. I like this lighter Tomine. After all that dreary realness it's nice to see there are smiles and happiness buried within.
I'm a big fan of Tomine's other work, especially Summer Blonde. While this doesn't always rise to the same level of emotional depth, it was a quick, fun read that my fiancee and I both enjoyed.
The description of the book pretty much sums up what you'll be reading in this short work. But it is delightful, heartwarming, and really fun to read. And as it's such a quick read, you'll probably read it again! It's relatable in many ways, even if you're not getting married anytime soon or ever, and it's so witty and humorous without throwing away serious matters either. A really lovely little piece.
A short little comic on the trials of organizing a wedding. Might make a good gift to toss in with a wedding present. I guess I was hoping for a little more depth. Joe Matt, it ain't.
I've loved Tomine for years. This collection perfectly translates those little hiccups, perfect moments, & frustrations that come with organizing a BIG DAY.
My fiancee and I are planning our wedding, and this was a perfect little satire of our planning process. Recommended to those getting married and for those that consider themselves above all the nonsense surrounding the modern American wedding.
Highly recommend for those planning a wedding, or have planned a wedding, or thinking about planning a wedding.... Funny, insightful and touching.
