About the Author

Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1934 to a family of Irish and Italian background. By the time he could hold a pencil, he knew what his life's work would be. His determination to create books for children led to a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and an MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California.It drove him through the years of teaching, designing greeting cards and stage sets, and painting church murals until 1965, when he illustrated his first children's book, Sound, by Lisa Miller for Coward-McCann. Eventually, freed of other obligations, he plunged full time into both writing and illustrating children's books.He names Fra Angelico and Giotto, Georges Rouault, and Ben Shahn as major influences on his work, but he soon found his own unique style. His particular way with color, line, detail, and design have earned him many of the most prestigious awards in his field, among them a Caldecott Honor Award for Strega Nona, the Smithsonian Medal from the Smithsonian Institution, the Kerlan Award from the University of Minnesota for his "singular attainment in children's literature," the Catholic Library Association's Regina Medal for his "continued distinguished contribution," and the University of Southern Mississippi Medallion. This was one of my FAVORITE books as a child. My mother read it to me and I read it to my daughter. I purchased this book to read to a friend's children while they are here visiting. I grew up in Texas, and Texan's have a lot of state pride! It's not only about bluebonnets and the state of Texas, but the strength and courage of a little girl and her Native American culture as well as the overall caring nature for her community.

Found lovely handmade bluebonnet ornaments at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for our Grands. and knew the exact books from Tomie dePaola to accompany them. Beautifully written and illustrated, these books connect children to a heritage more eloquent and mindful than flash-in-the-pan action figures and dolls.

This is one of my favorite books and as a kindergarten teacher in Texas we learn about Native Americans and the geography. I love the bluebonnets here. This book is a beautiful story about a Native American girl who sacrificed her favorite object for rain to help her nation (tribe). It's one of my favorites and my students love it as well.

Beautiful story. We paired it with a craft. The kids drew blue bonnet stems on their papers. Then, using the bottom of a plastic soda bottle dipped in blue paint, we added the flower petals. It had a neat effect!

Love this book! Happy memories of this book being read to me as a child. Unfortunately, it came dented up on the corners which was a disappointment.

I started working with leather years ago in elementary school. I ordered this book more to see the projects offered, which are great and easy to do, and as a bonus, with well written directions!It was interesting to read the instructions on how to score your design with a craft knife - I've always used a leather knife. Not sure I would be able to use a craft knife that way either. I think a diagram of the layers of the skin of the leather would have helped the description of what you try to do when scoring the design on the top of the leather. Just my opinion though.Would I suggest this book to others? Wholeheartedly!

I've got a lot of leather laying around and I haven't done much with it because I have found it a little hard to work with. This book is easy to understand and easy to read and has made "working with leather" much easier ... in fact I don't have much lying around any more and am looking for some resources for some more leather.Good written publication, easy to understand, very informative.

This hobby has fascinated me since I was in the Scouts, years ago. But I'm a newbie in working with leather. This book gave me some great ideas, with step by step instruction. It really covers the whole process from buying leather to tooling, stitching and making projects. I'm looking forward to putting this teaching to work. I'm glad I found this to help me out.

Let's face it, we all like to make things and work with our hands. This book tells you what you need to get started in a fun hobby. I am going to make key fobs for Christmas next year. If you really wanted to you could make some extra money with this new skill. There are patterns included and plenty of ideas. I have the kindle version so the patterns are not as good as print.

There are many aspects to leatherworking: selection of materials, tools, techniques, styles...this volume gives you a taste of each subject. Generally clear, but if I am going to learn to 'lace' leather, more specifics will be needed. Worth having if you are just starting out.

This book does not explain how to work with leather. It gives basic descriptions of some techniques but does not explain how to perform them. For example, Decorative stitching: It says "decorative stitching may be added." That's it! It doesn't tell you how or describe any steps or techniques.

Good info for someone who has never touched a leather tool, or been in a leather craft shop. Same info can be obtained in a 10 min conversation with a experienced leather worker, or even a retail store employee. That being said, it was a quick read, and not unhelpful, just quite basic.I felt that I needed more explanation, or better sentence structure in nearly all topics. It wasn't a nice flow of text, nor did that lend to an easy read.

Disappointed with the contents, google and youtube will give you more information on how to work leather than this book. Save your $ 4.99

This is the music from the film - in the same keys as the film and same basic versions. If you know the movie or had the LP record or CD, you will enjoy playing the music! The music though is not for beginners, these are standard piano versions.I was particularly looking for "The Glove" which was hard to find anywhere else but in this book; although this is a piano version and not the orchestrated version of this song as heard on the soundtrack, it's basically the same, maybe not as technical as the fully-orchestrated version, for obvious reasons.

Authentic to the soundtrack. This is the real version, not some watered-down rearrangement. Not for the beginning pianist, however, though the reward is a set of beautiful piano arrangements you will enjoy.

Perfect Score! Pun intended! One of my favorite movies and now I can learn the music too! Joplin was brilliant. This is a full score rendition and not some dumbed down version. Enjoy!

Great to get this old songbook still from the movie. I love these songs.

I gave this sheet music as a birthday present to a dear friend who plays piano (I don't). She absolutely loves it (and ragtime in general). She now plays it for us when we are visiting at her house...everyone really enjoys it!

Purchased because my father and I both love the movie. It's a classic. Sadly, as is rarely the case in my experience, this book is not as good as the movie. I was expecting the usual -that the movie had nowhere near the detail and background information, and that the book would paint an even better story. This is not the case. I wish it were.

The rags are presented in near-original format along with Marvin Hamlisch's renditions as played in the movie. I was pleased to find "Luther", the mournful dirge for the character's death early in the movie that prompted Hooker to meet up with Gondorf to get the "sting" in operation.

Poet and National Public Radio commentator Codrescu ( Belligerence ) was born in Romania, left as a teenager and returned to observe the shocks and joys of revolution from December 1989 to January 1991. This report of his homecoming, jubilation and disenchantment makes an excellent companion volume to Codrescu's early memoir, The Life and Times of an Involuntary Genius . The first book was a lyric portrait of the artist as a raffish would-be poet in rural Transylvania; the one in hand is an equally sly but more worldly meditation on politics and personal history. The author opens on a note of sobriety, recounting the apparent end of despotism. The remainder of the book bears a more individual imprint, as Codrescu revisits scenes from his past, tries to look up old friends and offers thoughts on "cultural genocide." His outlook is summed up with the words, "I have never been able to abide either authority or bureaucrats. That is why I'm a poet." And thus, he finds enough still to rail against in Romania, questioning the veracity of the revolution itself as a series of "staged media events" possibly brought about by an elite conspiracy. Codrescu has succeeded at a disconcerting task: writing a delightful book about a harrowing subject. After leaving Romania in his late teens and pursuing careers in the United States in poetry, academia, and journalism, Codrescu, with an assignment from National Public Radio, hurried back to revolutionary Romania at Christmas 1989. In this limpid and lively account that both chronicles the changes that have taken place and recollects his own past, Codrescu brings a fine attentiveness to the common folk he encounters: travelers on the train, hotel porters and cabbies, students and policemen. He describes with skepticism the "game of mirrors" played by the revolutionaries (the apparent new good guys) and the terrorists (ostensibly the old bad guys). Wit and irony color nicely his observations on political society and, by extension, human nature. A most entertaining, witty, colorful, yet intelligent, articulate, and realistic account of the 1989 Romanian Anti-Communist Revolution. I highly recommend this book to anyone with the sligthest interest in the topic.

Since I am going to Romania next week I wanted to read some background information and got this book. It is really enlightening and fit the bill for me.

When I visited Romania for a month in 1979, I saw a beautiful green land of geese and flowering apple trees, ghostly old Transylvanian hill towns where each charmingly-warped house had eyes. Ham, cheese, mamaliga (polenta) and tsuica marked my days and the warm reception by Romanian friends gave me memories forever. But even then, before the Dracula-Leader went totally bonkers, Romania bore Orwellian overtones. Charades ruled the roost. Bookstores sold stuff that nobody wanted to read. Shoe stores sold footwear that nobody wanted to buy. The news wasn't new. "Friendship with all countries" meant that everyone was suspect. The gypsies lived in junkyards on real desolation rows. Pollution covered the territory of a `people's republic'. How glad I was that I had not been born Romanian. When, over ten years later, the "Romanian Revolution" occurred, I was both glad (Dracula had met his silver bullet) and horrified, when I heard that perhaps 60,000 people had been killed.Andrei Codrescu, a Romanian exile in the USA, felt a great burst of hope. His country would get out from under at last. He rushed, full of memories and dreams, back to Romania with an National Public Radio team. THE HOLE IN THE FLAG is the poetic, humorous, well-paced memoir of what he found, how he'd left it, with bits on adjusting in America, his old classmates, and his family. At first the reader shares all the stories, the rumors, the excitement, the sounds of battle. Later, in cooler times, Codrescu, like the rest of the world (or those who paid attention), realized that he'd been had. The charades had not stopped. Romania had gone through yet another one. Was it a revolution ? How many had actually died and who had killed them ? Who were the new leaders ? How did the leader die ? What was Russia's role in all this ? When I returned to Romania in 1996, my friends, now deeply disillusioned, raised all these questions and supplied a few depressing answers. With both eyes open and equipped by Romanian life with a large supply of cynicism, Codrescu re-writes the story of the "Revolution" in the latter half of his book. This is top reporting, top writing. Only a poet could write about Ceausescu's Romania and the state of mind it created, because words might fail anyone else. I could easily give the book five stars for writing, but have given it four because, sadly, it is dated now. Perhaps readers will not find the events so relevant, but as a look at human nature, it will never go out of style. I doubt if Bob Dylan had ever seen or thought about Romania, but to quote him is to sum up the feeling you'll get from THE HOLE IN THE FLAG."Now at midnight, all the agents and the superhuman crewCome out and round up everyone that knows more than they do.They they bring them to the factory where the heart-attack machineIs strapped across their shoulders and then the kerosene,Is brought down from the castles by insurance men who goCheck to see that nobody is escaping from Desolation Row." *with one minor change

It was about 2.25 am in the morning when I finished Codresacu's riveting memoir The Hole in the Flag which I found poignant, fey, hopeful and insightful. Sometimes I read a book which demands that it be devoured voraciously and this book falls into that category. For me, the Romanian revolution is still a cause of some mystification, but it is clear that it was more orchestration than spontaneous uprising. The current controversy with Mircea Dinescu and the debate over the availability of Securitate files, many of which have been pilfered and doctored no doubt. I found my discussions with locals in 2001interesting but wondered whether the divisiveness was a smoke screen yet again. Codrescu's is a reflective and analytical look at Romania just after the Revolution, and his own struggle to comprehend and make sense of the maelstrom that followed is one of the strengths of the work. At turns, banal, burlesque, and brilliant the book is skilfully written and will appeal as much to the general reader as it does to the Romanianists. I heartily recommend this book.

This is a poor piece of work. The author seems to know nothing of the psychology of decision making, and not that much about the markets. His writing is graceless and repetitious, with pointless asides. The essence of Douglas's message is this: Develop a "winning attitude." And be disciplined. Don't have a neurotic relationship to the market. This is obvious stuff, and the author communicates it poorly. Some of the content is seriously misguided. For example, Douglas asserts, on no authority except his own say so, that the "true attraction of trading" is . . . self-expression. (At p. 18.) This is wrong: the true attraction of trading is . . . making money. Another example: Douglas claims that traders who think that the best way to get better at trading is to learn more about the financial markets are falling into "a trap" because "the market simply offers too many often conflicting variables to consider." (At p. 13.) Douglas repeatedly, and egregiously, devalues knowledge of the markets. I am tempted to make an unkind remark, but will refrain, and just say caveat emptor!

This book clearly explains the mindset of a successful trader and what it takes to succeed. It's easy to read, the hard part is undoing head games. So far, so good.

Imagine her sitting, face drawn in the front row, while he was forced to face the press at The PGA Tour HQ after being caught cheating by Elin.There is plenty for the golfer. His change to the Nike Tour ball which flew straighter, after which he won the US Open by 15 shots at Pebble Beach...and ushered in the age of the modern ball. Tiger followed up with hitherto unheard of margins. Just how much are today's scores dependent on this technology?I only came to realize on the last three pages that he is still under probation for his drug cocktail arrest on Military Trail in May, 2017. As someone with three, and one very similar, back operations to those which Tiger underwent, I understand just how badly a man can crave Vicodin. But now we see TIger on television, charming to reporters, a warm humility in the man who rejected summarily nearly everyone who tried to hold him close. Perhaps burying the ghost of his controlling father and being left with only his mother will allow Kutilda to look upon her son with the pride denied her years ago.

LOVED this book! An absolute page turner from start to finish. Yes, I'm a golf fan, but this is a story of human psychology and the cost of being an outlier. Talks as much about parents as it does about Tiger himself. Riveting. Provides the dark, inspiring and sad context to rise and fall of Tiger Woods. Benedict does it again, leaving no stone unturned and piecing together a rare glimpse into the real Tiger Woods. A greek tragedy in every sense: promise, hope and generational talent brought down by hubris, vice, and karma. You do not need to be a golf fan to enjoy this book.

The two authors are so compassionate and understanding of what and who made Tiger. He is a product of his upbringing, as we all are and fixing ourselves as we get to be adults is usually impossible. As I always believed, Tiger's problems are mental and emotional and in some ways responsible for his physical problems too. The book is totally supportive of Tiger and I read the last few pages with tears clouding my eyes. Tiger should be happy with the book just because Benedict and Keteyian are on his side. If he's not, the reason is simply that it exposes personal sides of Tiger and being the intensely private person he is, he won't like that but I think he's beginning to realize the pettiness of his feelings and who's his friend and who isn't. If you love Tiger, you'll love this book.So private, here's an example: O'Meara was being interviewed by the Golf Channel and one question was how is Tiger and O'Meara answered with "good days and bad days." That's all he said. That night there was a late night Tiger text to O'Meara that read," I love you like a brother but I'd appreciate it if you didn't discuss my health with the media.I hope that all the people that were so good to Tiger thru the years, personal and professional, forgive him someday and try to understand him. He wasn't raised to be a good and nice person. Earl and Kultida were failures as parents in my opinion and this book, without saying so, makes that pretty clear.

Simply put, this is the most complete book about the rise and fall of one of the greatest golfers ever that I've ever read. The way his upbringing, and the way his parents raised him, and influenced him, showed up again and again as he grew into adulthood, and not always in a favorable way. You learn several not so pleasant things about the way he's treated people who were allegedly friends, and especially the people he perceived as enemies. He was constantly surrounded by money - fame - fortune - and obligations to keep it all going forward. All while retooling his swing several times, and (almost) coming back better than before. From a golf perspective, this book also clearly points out - more than once - just how good Tiger was in his hey day. No one - repeat no one - will ever consistently win 30% of the tournaments they enter in a year. Today's golfers would be likely to do it once,...and Tiger did it repeatedly. At one point he was the defending champ - in all four majors - at the same time. Obviously Tiger Woods the man is still a work in progress, and who knows when/if he'll ever win on tour again. But Tiger Woods the golfer is very simply one of if not the best ever. Stop labeling every golfer who wins once or twice "the next Tiger Woods". On the course, there will - never - be another.

An exceptional read and very entertaining as well as informative. It was quite interesting to delve into the life and childhood of Tiger and it was as expected, a domineering set of parents, who set out to create the worlds greatest golfer. Along the way the poor guy did not have a normal childhood, with friends and siblings. He was an only child, essentially shut off from the world though golf and more golf and when done with that some more golf. An introverted personality developed and who knows what he might have been like if not for his first love Dana........I liked that part of the book best. I wish the authors had let the reader know what ever became of Dana. Good book, buy it and enjoy it and you will more than likely want to read it again.
