The key to this book is the point that it helps to target what is meant by "growing up in an alcoholic home." Many of us do not recognize that Alcoholism is a "generational disease" and that active drinking as we think of it is not always the indicator of this condition. Alcoholism is a disease of attitude and behavior long past the time the drinking has stopped, sometimes in a relative, sometimes in the immediate family. It is the behavior within the family and its cumulative affect on those that follow that is the indicator. It helps the process of understanding to follow a program with gentle support such as Al-Anon. This is Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is written for anyone who wants to recover and needs the perspective of those who are going through the same process. It is written fron the inside out through the stories of many participants. Al-Anon members share their experience, strength and hope with each other at meetings, through literature, and one on one. One of many pieces of literature written by Al-Anon directly for the family and friends of Alcoholics and considered essential by many to focus attention on personal growth but specifically targeting those who have grown up in an alcholic environment.

I wish they hadn't revised this in 2006; the original was better. Minor nit.Still, it took Al-Anon a long time to address the literature needs of the adult children of alcoholics. If you think you're children weren't affected by the drunk in your home, think again and read this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who was raised by alcoholic or mentally unstable parents, or who has been affected by a loved one's drinking or drug use. Its like holding up a mirror and gives understanding why we behave or feel like we do.

Heartbreaking to read many of the personal stories, but a lot of recovery in these pages for Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA).

This book was helpful to me, the child of an alcoholic, and one who also became an alcohiolic himself. History will repat itself when it comes to alcoholism. It is a learned trait in many cases, although an alcoholic does not have to have alcoholic parents to become one. I did. AND, it is helpful to understand that none of that was my fault. This book highlights erroneous thoughts and beliefs that any family member might generate to survive in a confusing and twisted homelife.

Great book. My Al Anon group book study is working on this book right now and it is so deep and helpful...bringing out a lot of emotion, memories, and healing.

This is the nitty-gritty effects of alcoholic families. Growing up in a dysfunctional house with problem drinkers and the way each family member distorts reality. Sobering stories of abuse as well as a way out for adults who have experienced this. The effects are life-long, a program to help, along with this book, can be life changing.
