There's not much information on most of the species listed, but there are enough facts to engage casual readers. However, many of the flora and fauna discussed (such as gulls, osprey, owls, ravens, and mallards) are fairly common to other places in North America. Fylling's illustrations are detailed and appealing, accurately portraying the various creatures in their habitats. Sidebars are also peppered throughout, often containing fascinating anecdotes. The text is easily readable and accessible, and the trim size makes this volume great for slipping into backpacks. I've been excitedly waiting for the release of this book for a few months. It's without a doubt the best book for kids about PNW flora and fauna that I've found. What is in it is beautiful and well explained.That said, I was disappointed to find that it's missing black bears, cougars, bobcats, coyotes, rabbits, grey squirrels, hawks (but there are 3 species of owl)- all of which live in our neighborhood just 40 mins from Seattle. I was hoping they would be included so that my kids could learn about them too.Maybe the next book? ;)

My grandson loves is as well as his parents. Was a great birthday gift for a budding naturalist from the Northwest.

My daughter loves this book. When we are at the lake she is constantly grabbing to book for reference and to spot the different animals we encounter. I would highly recommend it for nature loving children.

Wonderful book for kids eager to learn about nature & who like detailed information about the creatures they encounter. I read it with my 7 yr old grandson at bedtime when he visited this summer.

Purchased before a vaca so that our exploration would be richer. Loved it!

Not quite what I expected, but an adorable book!

Was hoping this would also have the plants to avoid in nature, but it doesn't.
