From Publishers Weekly

The first book in Blackstock's Restoration series literally begins with a bang: airplanes fall out of the sky in the opening paragraphs, at which point the novel's protagonists and readers become swept up in a stunning set of circumstances, the import of which slowly sink in as the novel briskly moves forward. Unlike the deluge of dramatic depictions of the end times, in which Christians disappear and the world reacts, this story focuses on a natural phenomenon-albeit one that most of the characters believe is a message from God-that profoundly alters human society. Blackstock's main characters, the affluent Bannings, who live in suburban Birmingham, Alabama, initially react to this disaster by putting themselves first, for fear that any other strategy would endanger their lives. Soon, however, challenged by the Sermon on the Mount, they begin reaching out generously to neighbors. Their nascent attempts at a communal approach to life will likely be picked up in future novels in this series. Blackstock's subplots are less compelling than her vision of an Electromagnetic Pulse-damaged world; particularly contrived is the story's murder mystery, which plays out predictably. Still, at its best moments, this novel is in league with first-rate adventure fiction and bodes well for the series to come. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Post-apocalyptic fiction exhibits a magnetic pull on my imagination. Every time I see a well-done cover for it, I almost always click the Kindle free sample button. The cover of Last LightWhen I discover a captivating, delightful example of the genre, I just want to dive in and never leave. So it was with Last Light by Terri Blackstock, which you should definitely read today.Although one might quibble about this, the book fits into the EMP sub-genre, with everything electric suddenly non-functional and our modern humans forced to survive without their modern conveniences. The action gets going on page one, with planes falling out of the sky, and never lets up.(As a side note, in this it is much superior to the better-known One Second After by William Forstchen, which takes about a year -- or at least the whole first chapter -- before anything even a little bit interesting happens. But let us not digress.)Blackstock's characters Doug and his daughter Deni feel real in a way I rarely encounter. They make mistakes, they do stupid things, they stumble... and that makes me care about them all the more. I spent half the book looking away and trying to read out the corner of my eye because I don't want them to be hurt.Believable characters in which the reader wants to invest, suspense, a murderer on the loose, and more. This novel has all the ingredients for escapist delight, and I recommend it most highly.

This is a re-release but somehow I missed it the first go around. If you missed it you should pick it up as well. It is a page turner of a read that will leave you pondering how you would survive in a similar situation. Can you even imagine what it would be like if suddenly everything electric just quit? This isn't just the lights in your house but it is your car, your cell phone, your watches. All those everyday conveniences suddenly don't work. Think about this . . . even the water that comes into your house does so because of an electrical pump. How would you get water and how would you filter that water in order to drink it?This is the scenario that unfolds in the story. The good, the bad and the ugly are all magnified in this tale. Some of the people resort to hoarding what they have and some continue to be giving people. Evil begins to take root causing everyone to arm themselves against the unknown. The more the situation deteriorates, the more people's true characters are revealed. The main characters in the story are the Branning family and we are allowed to see how their overindulged lives have slowly destroyed what God had intended for them. Through the worst of circumstances God begins to reveal to them what He intends. This is the first book in the Restoration Series. It is followed by three more and I can hardly wait to dive in to the rest of them to see how it all turns out.I recieved a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

I read the beginnings of five suspense, mystery, and/or thriller books before settling on this book as having the most interesting start. I am glad that I stuck with this book since it turned out to be an enjoyable read. I was pulled into the story from the beginning, and the author kept me hooked throughout with short chapters that kept the story moving. This book was perfect for reading on breaks, too.The story starts off with every electronic item failing indefinitely. This event pushes the characters into despair, which in turn causes some to resort to crime. The main family of the book, the Brannings, try to come to terms with the change, but that proves to be more and more difficult when murder becomes an issue for the small, well-to-do community where they live. For the most part, the characters in this book were interesting and likable. However, Deni Branning becomes a central character in the book, and she was also the most annoying character to me. She describes herself at different moments of realization in the book as "...rebellious, arrogant. Foolish. Irrational." as well as "spoiled and vain and selfish." That is a pretty good summary of her character. It was impossible to like a character with those characteristics, but there was enough balance from the other characters in her family and her neighborhood that helped me get past my feelings for her.Be aware that this is a Christian Fiction book. If one goes into the read knowing that, then there should be no surprises. The Christian themes may be somewhat heavy handed for a couple of chapters in the middle of the book and a couple more near the end to some readers, but, for the most part, the Christian themes are more smoothly integrated into the rest of the book.Although there was never really a definite explanation for the catastrophic event, and a few other questions were left unanswered, I still felt that the main murder/suspense story was complete. I do realize that this is the first in a series, though. Considering the idea of more characters like Deni and the price of the other books in the series (this was a free read from the Kindle store), I am still contemplating whether or not to continue in the series. Still, this was a great, fast paced read that I would recommend to others.Note: Originally Posted on Goodreads.com [...]
