I enjoyed this time travel fantasy! I will read more of this series. Ree & Ned are great characters. I love the imagination of this author. I have to wonder which characters Ree's friends will fall for, lol! Thank you!
This is a good read, but you will need read to past this book to get a final resolution to the Cipher's Kiss. And that is a lot of reading. It worked for me, and I would recommend it.
For those readers who like time travel books, this is fun and great reading.
I love time travel romance, but it has a serious weakness as a genre: the author needs to be able to pull off a vaguely believable method for time travel and handle the impact to time consistently. To me, this book failed at this and a few other things in a number of ways.1. The unreliable narrator. Chapter 2 introduced some of Ned's internal thoughts, which quickly prove to either be untrue or to put into question the author's treatment of the consistency of time. I found this extremely unnecessary. The author could have hinted with truths rather than undermining our confidence in her or Ned.2. Spell functionality. The spell that is used for time travel its said many times but only sometimes does it work. Neither Ree or Ned ever seem to question what makes it work when (presumably Malcolm knows), at least until the very last moment.3. Spell users. Even though Ree says the spell to send herself back in time, once there she seems to assume someone else would need to cast it to send her back. Malcolm and Ned also state this like it's fact. All that changes at the end, but spoilers! Both issue 2 and 3 could have been solved by having her know she can get back on her own but only if she can figure out the details beyond the words. This could have been stated from the beginning.4. Historical inaccuracy. I'm hardly an expert, but anyone who knows even the slightest bit of UK history knows that Scotland is noted for their very loose marriage laws (Gretna Green, anyone?). At that time, a couple that both said they were married, were now really married. Yet Ned tells people they're married during part of their jaunt, and it is implied that Ree agrees with him at some point. So, they are married even if neither thinks they are. But Ned should know this!5. Don't even get me started on the whole weirdness with Malcolm. Pretty much every interaction Ree had with the man from the third to the last chapter distressed and confused me.Massive cleanup could make this a decent book. I don't recommend reading unless that very unlikely event occurs.
I picked this up on a whim and was very happy with this choice! If you are one for time travel, romance, Scottish Highlanders, etc then this will be an enjoyable distraction. It starts with an adventure and keeps a good pace until the end. Can't wait for more!!!
