I was prompted to buy this book after seeing Come From Away on Broadway (which by the way is a moving, eloquent, and uplifting experience that shouldn't be missed by anyone with access to the play). Kevin's book gives a first person account of the events following 9/11 when his plane (along with many others) was diverted to the small Newfoundland town of Gander during the closure of American air space. His warmth, gratitude, and optimism regarding the response of the town's people is at the core of this book. But a second, and equally enduring, is HIS response leading to the "Pay It Forward" activities on the 9/11 anniversary each year. He demonstrates through faith and compassion how we can serve each other without fear or ulterior motives. I recommend this book to anyone needing to inject some meaning, kindness, and faith into his/her life.
I became interested in the story of “Gander†after seeing the musical “Come from Away†on Broadway. “Channel of Peace†is written by Kevin Tuerff, an Air France passenger, whose story is integrated throughout the musical. Mr. Tuerff shares his experience in Gander in the days following 9/11 and how his life has changed since then (to include initiating a “pay it forward†initiative).This book complements “The Day the World Came to Town†by Jim Defede. Defede’s book is more comprehensive and captures a variety of perspectives; Tuerff’s book is more autobiographical. Both are uplifting and motivate me to become a more welcoming person.If I could only pick one book to read: For sheer information, I’d choose Defede’s book. For a more spiritual message, or to learn more about the musical, Tuerff’s book is the one to read.
This is a very personal account by a couple that were grounded in Gander after the horror of 9/11. This little known part of the tragedy, gives evidence to the humanity of small town in Newfoundland. Having been to "The Rock", I can personally affirm that the citizens on this Canadian province are the most giving and caring people I've ever meet...9/11 or not.This book brings the acts of love by the people of Gander down to a very intimate level through the authors thoughts and feelings as well as those of the people that touched him. The book is an uplifting read that shows love exists in places you would least expect.I hope to continue the authors campaign to spread the word about the pay it forward campaign under the banner of "Look Up and Gander" by encouraging the acts of kindness to strangers.
I picked up "Channel of Peace" by Kevin Tuerff after watching the Broadway hit musical "Come From Away." The musical is about the kindness and generosity that the communities surrounding Gander, Newfoundland showed to stranded passengers of numerous international flights following the attacks in America on 9/11/01. Kevin was one of those passengers and was deeply moved by the outpouring of kindness and carried it forward as he worked his way back to his home in Austin, TX. He goes on to write about paying it forward through acts of kindness in his home city, and beyond. This is a short read, more of a memoir of what happened during the time of crisis, and what Kevin continues to do to make the world a better place. Buy the book, see the musical, show kindness to a stranger, and we can all be a "channel of peace."
If you have seen the wonderful musical "Come From Away" and want to learn more of the actual experiences of the "plane people" don't buy this book. Rather, read "The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland." It is full of the stories of the hospitality of Newfoundlanders, hospitality that I have been fortunate to experience first hand. This book is more of a self promotion of the author's Pay it Forward impacts, which are wonderful, but you don't learn much about the broader experiences of the plane people.
"Channel of Peace" is a result of the author's unscripted layover in Gander, Newfoundland, on that fateful day, Sept. 11, 2001. Kevin found a community of angels who took in complete strangers for three days and comforted them until their flights could continue onward to the USA. His delightful story shows that there are still people who can take a very stressful situation and turn things around enough to make you believe in humanity again. Read this book and then go see the play that is selling out every performance - "Come From Away".
As a Newfoundlander, I love the story of Gander, Newfoundland on 9/11. I like hearing the story from Kevin's perspective. I already knew how generous and caring the Newfoundland people are, since I am one. It warmed my heart to hear how Kevin's experience inspired the Pay It Forward 9/11 movement.
I saw the musical "Come From Away," back in February of 2017 on Broadway. I wish it had entered my life sooner. It's message of courage and kindness in the face of World Wide change, terror and tragedy was something that I very much needed. As I began to research the show I found this book by Kevin Tuerff. Onstage he is depicted as Kevin #1. The first half of the book chronicles his experiences in Gander the week of 9/11 2001, and provides interesting illuminations on stories in the show as well as additional stories that do not appear in the narrative of the show.The second half of of the book is where it really takes off. Kevin's experience in Gander lead him to create random acts of kindness in his own life and business. these are the stories that were most impactful for me. These are the stories that we can all learn from, and the ideas that we may not have considered.If you are trying to affect change in our country and in the world that we share with so many others I would strongly recommend this book. It is a wellspring of information and inspiration.
